The North Shore Coastal Walk is relatively flat but fairly long, around 30km each day. We chose this section first because we didn’t want to give our hikers too many hills to start off. We wanted them to test their gear, pack weight, and get to know each other. In some respects walking on the sand all day is equally hard to a muddy incline! We had to time the start of this hike perfectly, to avoid the tidal issues on day one; the group got wet up to their waists but at least no one had to swim!
Starting our Te Araroa trail mission via these sections in Auckland was an excellent way to test gear and fitness before heading out into the bush.
